about

Static went unreleased due to the band's split in February 2006. To my mind, and taste, it was not 100% finished. We had intended to return for another spate of mixing to tweak a few elements; such as making the drums louder in Words For Lost, the drum roll/fills louder and more to the front in Head To Head, and change much of the sound of Berlin altogether - which is what I wanted to do anyway - as I thought it sounded a little flat. We were aiming for something colder and more clinical with this EP to suit the songs and the new electronic element but I don't think we were quite there, at least with Berlin. Within Without on the other hand I think is the best sounding song we ever did.

This was also the first recording where we'd tried a different space, and took the "project" solely out of Echidna Studios up at Christmas Hills. Greg MacMillan took a back seat and David handled much of the recording. Once we'd recorded all the music we needed we had "editing sessions" at David's place where David and Bart did all the necessary cutting and automating.
Some final elements, such as Oliver Mann's vocals, were recorded by Nicholas Albanis at his home studio.

The EP was then mixed by Nao Anzai at Rancho Cumbo.
